Code Club: Ākonga Spotlight

At Code Club Aotearoa, we love catching up with club leaders, volunteers and students from all corners of the country to hear about their experiences so we can share their stories with you!

First up is Glen Eden Library Code Club in Tāmaki Makaurau. They kicked off their club journey in term 4 of 2023, and since then, their students have been working through the Scratch, Python and Machine Learning pathways with a bit of Raspberry Pi and robotics thrown in for good measure.

Each week, 11 enthusiastic tamariki come together to unleash their creativity and coding skills at their sessions. Among them is Max, a 10 year old coder with a passion for Raspberry Pi projects!

We caught up with Max to hear what he loves most about Code Club at Glen Eden Library.

Kia ora Max!

Why did you decide to join Code Club?

Because coding has always been one of the things I’ve wanted to learn and this presented a great opportunity to make it happen.

What’s the most fun thing about coding?

Watching your projects come to life after running the complete code. It’s always amazing when your code works, you made something from nothing and it’s really satisfying. At the moment I’m really enjoying learning Raspberry Pi and I’ve managed to complete two projects so far.

What’s the hardest bit about coding?

The hardest bit about coding is learning new coding languages because one coding language might not have the same principles as another which makes it challenging. Another hard thing about coding is the slightest misspelling or even accidentally placed capital can ruin your entire code which can make it challenging and hard to make code without instructions, which is why I’m so grateful to this amazing community of people that make Code Club possible.

If you could make something with code that helped people in Aotearoa, what would it be?

A software that when run you put how old you are and then it presents you with a few questions and depending on your answers for those it judges your skill level and gives you lots of questions to help you with your learning. At the start you could also get to choose which subject!

Tēnā koe Max!

Aspiring young coders like Max take part in Code Clubs all over Aotearoa every week. This is made possible through the dedication of our volunteers, kaiako, community educators and librarians, as well as the financial support from our sponsors.

We want to give a shout-out to Younity for sponsoring this important kaupapa. Younity’s generous contributions not only make Code Club possible but also ensure that we can reach a wider audience of tamariki, especially those that face barriers to accessing extracurricular coding education. Thank you, Younity, for helping us empower the next generation of creators and innovators!
