#Moonhack 2023

Every year, excitement builds in Code Clubs worldwide as the countdown to #Moonhack begins!

Moonhack is a free global online event organised and hosted by our friends at Code Club Australia. Every year, they unveil exciting projects based on a specific theme, uniting young coders for a two-week moonhacking adventure. Designed for ākonga aged 8-15 and accessible worldwide, Moonhack provides a free, user-friendly and hands-on intro to coding!

The event is a crowd favourite at Kauri Hackers Code Club in south Ōtautahi. One of our dedicated volunteers, Kate, shares her top tips to get involved and make the most of this fantastic event:

  • Running Moonhack as a team challenge is the most fun approach! We help ākonga to form small teams of 4-5 members, with a Moonhack captain, programmers and testers.

  • Pair up individuals with problem-solving skills and creative minds for a balanced approach.

  • Introduce a competitive element by incorporating a timer!

  • Use visual cards labelled ‘hacking’, ‘testing’ and ‘Moonhack_complete’ to help tamariki navigate each project stage.

  • Make sure to have multiple copies of the project instructions printed, as they are valuable resources for your kete.

  • As mentioned, every year features a unique theme and we encourage revisiting previous projects as they may align with your current learning inquiry.

  • Make the most of the certificates and posters for your Moonhackers and embrace the opportunity to collaborate and learn something new!

Moonhack offers exciting and inspiring projects, offering challenges and opportunities for all our coders, regardless of their skill level

This year's theme revolves around Space and Innovation! In alignment with World Space Week’s focus on Space and Entrepreneurship, Moonhack celebrates inventions initially designed for space exploration that are now part of our daily lives. There are six new projects available across three coding platforms: Scratch, Micro:bit and Python. Students who complete and submit their Space Junk project can go in the draw to have their project developed into a Code Club resource to share with the world! Participants have until November 26 to submit their projects to Code Club Australia, with the opportunity to be included in the showcase.

Ngā mihi nui Code Club Australia for putting together this incredible event and providing invaluable resources! Don’t hesitate to register, get involved and enjoy the adventure of Moonhacking!
